Outstanding Network Software January 3, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If installing on a network, read the "network instillation guide" carefully before proceeding. You may choose wireless or a wired mode. For best transmission of data my IT network engineer son in law recommended running an ethernet cable to my wireless router but I bet the wireless mode will work fine too. You can select custom install or install all software and I use both on 6 computers with a variety of operating systems and connected both wireless and wired to the network. The drivers installed flawlessly on these operating systems, Leopard, XP home, XP pro, and Vista home Premium. Just printed some photos from iphoto and all I can say is wow! Have not checked out all functions yet but hoping for positive results.
Upgrading firmware kills it December 31, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was able to set this printer up with no problem. Being the geek that I am, I decided to download and install the latest firmware. It was simple with the provided link in the start menu.
However, once it installs the printer disappears. I couldn't find it in printer list and couldn't figure out how to add it back.
Had to reinstall the drivers that came with it. It will first uninstall what is there and then you install like you were installing for the first time.
Excellent AIO printer! No more HP for me!!!! December 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I went back and forth for days trying to figure out the best AIO printer for my needs. I have struggled with a HP Officejet 7210 for 1.5 years and finally got tired of the paper jams and the document feeder misfeeds. I am not very productive when I have to stand over the machine to make sure an 8 page fax goes thru. Enough about the HP... This Epson Artisan 800 is awesome. First, it looks amazing; hands down the most beautiful AIO on the market. What's even better is the image quality. I have kept around an older Canon printer because it printed photos much better that my old HP Officejet (dammit, mentioned it again, sorry!); but this Epson's photo quality easily surpasses the Canon on both plain an glossy paper. I was a bit worried about reports of the printhead clogging with ink but, so far, I have not experience this (2 weeks of use). The best part for me is that I have printed over 100 pages so far and faxed nearly 50 pages and have not had one jam or misfeed! I love this thing. Oh, and also, it is fast and I love the touchscreen control pad! Thanks, S. Pendleton
Outstand for Pictures December 29, 2008 I've had the printer for about a week now and have seen its strengths and weaknesses. I gave it 5 stars only for its Photo abilities.
PROS: The Photos this printer makes are the best I've ever seen... Simply amazing. However, I had to use the Epson Ultra Premium Glossy paper as my other printer papers streaked or bleed and were unacceptable. Others may have had success with other papers... I think someone said something about Costco photo paper working well. The speed was Fantastic under 20 seconds for an 8 x 10! What took 5 minutes using the "Photo RMP - Max dpi" setting was done in seconds with the "Photo" setting... and I couldn't tell the difference, even with a magnifying glass (My Photoshop file was 300dpi to begin with). Also, to achieve a great photo, the printer settings MUST BE ACCURATE... I had to spend quite some time to dial in the best setting, which is "Paper type - Ultra Premium Glossy", "Photo RPM (Max dpi)" or "Photo" are identical to me. Color Controls/Color Mode "EPSON Vivid".
Another cool feature is the "Borderless" option that it actually printed my 8x10 photo with no white border. It was perfect all the way to the very edge of the paper. This is convenient for those that wish to frame photos and not deal with sizing issues during printing.
Wireless works great. It won't be hard to set up if you follow the instructions.
CONS Noisy... Clickety Clack... And takes a long time to start printing. I'm keeping my HP printer to do my text printing, and using the Artisan 800 as my photo printer...Did I say how amazing the photos were! And since I can now put the 800 anywhere with wireless, why not! Another CON is that it eats ink big time. My one 8x10 with a big blue sky took what looked like 1/4 of my light Cyan cartridge on standard size cartridge...that photo just cost me $2.50 (The Hi-Capacity cartridges from Epson are only 60% larger, and the costs would be the same per photo).
The paper tray was designed by fools. Not sure how a company like Epson signed off on that one. It must be removed entirely to reload, it's flimsy and requires fiddling with unintuitive paper guides that are not user friendly.
IN CONCLUSION The Artisan 800 ROCKS with photos! But get an HP if you want a good workhorse for everything else. (I have an older HP 6110 All-In-One for my home office).
An excellent printer that works well, except the fax December 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This printer is a breeze to set up on a network and actually works well from both a wired PC, a wireless Windows laptop, and a Mac laptop. Print quality is good. Scanning works fine over the network. CD labels print flawlessly. The card reader works fine over the network also. I haven't had any of the problems others have complained about.
I would give this printer 5 stars, but am taking a star off because the fax is somewhat kludgy. Sadly, I still have to send a lot of faxes and this printer doesn't handle redial very elegantly. The printer scans in all of the pages, then starts faxing. If a fax is rejected (except for a busy signal), there is no option to resend it--you have to rescan the entire job and try again.
