Amazon.com Product Description
Panasonic's DVD-RP56 DVD player uses 54 MHz 10-bit video digital-to-audio converters that process the video signal four times faster than the original 13.5 MHz rate. Combined with the DVD-RP56's progressive-scan output, the result is vivid, texturized image reproduction from your DVD discs. Additional video features include color, brightness, contrast and sharpness picture controls, as well as video black level control for dynamic color contrast. A component-video output is also included for optimal connection to compatible TVs.

High-speed, five-step smooth-motion scan lets you scan forward or reverse in five speeds, up to 100 times faster than the normal playback rate. Or use frame advance to move ahead just one frame at a time for a detailed look at the program. Enhanced video features include cinema mode, which improves the visibility of details in dark scenes and gives a more cinema-like luminance and color to the picture.

With twin-laser pickup, the Panasonic DVD-RP56 will also play your audio CD discs, including home-recorded CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 files. For an enhanced home-theater experience, use the digital-optical output to connect the DVD player to a Dolby Digital capable receiver. With DTS signals channeled through the digital output as well, the DVD-RP56 will playback both majoro formats of 5.1-channel audio for complete digital surround sound. Or if you have just two speakers, the V.S.S. mode will simulate five-channel surround sound. Enjoy other audio features like dialogue enhancer, which makes the dialogue more audible in certain scenes, and Bass Plus for an enhanced bass kick from your subwoofer.

Convenient features include disc stabilizer, which increases playability while reducing the chances of warping discs, chapter preview, onscreen menu icons, and a remote control with large cursor for simple menu navigation. A jog/shuttle dial is also provided on the front of the player, as are other controls for added access to DVD functions.

The Panasonic DVD-RP56 DVD player comes with a warranty of one year on parts and 90 days on labor.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player!!!   January 7, 2009
This product has been a workhorse in my entertainment center for quite a while! I have never had a problem with the player. It's performance has been fantastic for me.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Investment - Don't Buy Panasonic DVD Players   December 7, 2008
We have had our Panasonic DVD-RP56 player for over a year. It was great while it was working. Occasionally there was a burp and the DVD would freeze or stutter but we thought it was the DVDs themselves. Then all of a sudden no DVD would play. The HO2 error code appeared and then the word STOP. No matter what menu I played with nothing changed. The menus would work, but not the PLAY mode.

It was then that I entered the model number for a troubleshooting suggestion that I learned that this is the standard way this model quits working.

I was shocked to see that others had the same problem and PANASONIC refused to deal with it. Paying more to fix something that was not your fault to begin with is very poor customer relations. Panasonic once stood for reliable products and I was never afraid to buy or to recommend their products. Now I will do everything in my power to advise against their products. I am sorry to see that the Japanese code of ethics has been lost in the United States marketing.

Purchased RP56 about 3 years ago for $120. It has operated w/o issue until today. Got the H02 error like everyone else. The player was subjected to moderate use (2 DVDs per week average)so, I was expecting it to run a few more years. I will avoid Panasonic DVD players. I think LG is their parent company, so I will be cautious with that brand as well.

Panasonic - what a junk!. Don't touch with a 30 ft pole unless you want to pay more to repair stupid "H02" error than the cost of Panasonic. Stay away from Panasonic.

3 out of 5 stars Fine at first,, but now having issues   January 6, 2005

I recieved this DVD player in 12/2001 for a Christmas Gift. Everything has been mostly great up until 2 months ago. It was spectacular at playing DVDs and I also loved the MP3 playback capability and standard CD playback. For some reason, the player is now unable to play MP3 discs or standard CDs. It will play one or two songs and then seemingly get "hung up" at random places on the discs. Inserting a DVD cleaning disc into the unit resulted in an "HO5" error message, and these "HO" errors seem to be quite common here. While it will still play DVDs fine, I'm wondering if they are next on the list of non-playable items.
This player lasted just shy of 3 years. I'm thinking of getting the Panasonic 5 CD/DVD changer unit with extended warranty. I think Panasonic relies on the guy or gal that plays CDs and DVDs only a few times a year, rather than someone like me who will play 5-10 a week, depending. Overall I'm happy, as the sound and picture are great, but would recommended getting extended service on these Panasonic items.
