Decent toy December 27, 2008 I bought this along with a Treasure Hunter toy for my son for Christmas. He really likes the chest itself, which feels durable and has a red and blue rhinestone in each eye of the skeleton closure. He was excited to see the hidden compartment in the bottom of the chest. Yes, you can tell that there is a hidden compartment, but if there is anything in there it doesn't really matter. One of the sides of the board that comes out has a little piece carved out so little fingers can pull the board up. Someone complained that you can tell the piece comes out, but it's just a kid's toy. Not a big deal to me. He hasn't really played with the flag/bandana or the eye patch, so I can't really comment on those much. I'm sure he'll get into them when he gets a little older. The gold coins are plastic, which someone complained about, and come in a velvet-feel pouch. However, I don't mind them being plastic because so many metal parts on toys today are having lead found in them. I would rather have cheap plastic coins than have to worry about lead poisoning. Also, if they were metal, they might hurt someone or break something if they were thrown or dropped. I think the toy is cute and durable, and I'm sure it will get much use over the years.
so much fun December 16, 2008 My son has had this chest for almost a year. He is now 5. To begin with he carried it everywhere with him. It is made of wood, and not just thin wood, it is a pretty sturdy chest. For him it is big... its actually just small enough he can actually carry it, but it isn't overly large.
It is true that it comes with only what is pictured, and that the secret compartment isn't hard to find. It is a false bottom panel that my son takes out and shows to everyone so it wouldn't be a secret anyway ;). He stores all his prize belongings in it, and has collected pennies to fill the money bag with. (wasn't too impressed with the plastic coins, I guess). Sometimes it is quite heavy, he fits a lot in there.
It is sturdy enough that it has gone down the stairs a few times (full flight) and has stood up to my 3 and 5 year old boys carrying it everywhere for almost a year now.
Great product! They love it.
Good Quality and Fun to Hide Stuff in! November 16, 2008 I bought this treasure chest when my son turned 4. It's been over a year and my son still loves to play with it!
This chest is nicely made- thick wood, and great quality as all of Melissa and Doug's products are. The coins are a little thicker and nicer than the cheap ones elsewhere. The red bag has a drawstring and is used by my sons to carry around their coins. The pirates flag is fun- there is nothing to hang it with, so you have to get creative in how to hang it up. My sons enjoyed having the flag hung up in their room as it then became a Pirates Hangout. The false bottom is great for hiding your coin bag, or for anything else little you want to secretly store.
We haven't used the patch much, but we bought this toy more for the chest. With toddlers and preschoolers banging on it and lugging it around, it has held up very nicely! My sons love putting their little stuffed animals and toys into the chest so they can hide. It's been a great toy and I feel that the price of this chest is worth the good quality you get from a Melissa and Doug toy.
Perfect for a rough 5-year old, Great "secret" compartment. May 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great toy for a 5-year old who loves pirates. I've seen lots of imaginative play involving this treasure chest and it's pretty neat looking! I wish I would have found this sooner. We have lots of pirate "booty" loaded into this chest each day. I'm happy that we bought it and it is used quite often. When it isn't being used, it looks great in my son's room. Another great Melissa & Doug item.
Not pirates of the Caribean April 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This treasure chest is not from Disney. Thank God!
The chest is fairly solid (we've had some problems with a rivet but it's not a big deal. The hidden compartment is good, although, it would be nice if there was a way to brace it in, in case the chest is flipped over...again, not a biggie. The coins are nearly unbreakable, but dull copper, which is unexciting to my 5 year old, but cheap plastic coins are available in party supply store for practically dirt. The eye patch is ignored and the Jolly Roger is ignored, but when he wants to play pirates, this chest is always part of the play - every time. Another winner from Melissa & Doug.
